Nissan's EV Prototype

Nissan has committed to producing an all electric vehicle by 2010. While this prototype looks like a breadbox, the production version promises to be much more attractive. With an estimated 100 mile range, Nissan promises that there will be no premium for this vehicle being electric.

According to Mark Perry, Nissan’s Director of Product Planning, in a recent interview for Wired, Nissan plans to shoot for volume rather than price adjustment. Perry said “We may not be the first to market with an EV, but we’ll be the first to mass-market an EV.”

Analyst think that Nissan may be the come-from-behind leader in the electric car space because their CEO, Carlos Ghosn has stated that the cord is the future of the automobile. He’s backed that up with an all-in bet on a practical, affordable hatchback with decent range, reasonable recharge time and room for five people. Oh – and Nissan says it’ll cost about 90 cents to charge.

PhoenixEV is excited to see another manufacturer recognize that the electric vehicle is the future of transportation. With a near 90% efficiency with onboard energy (excluding the efficiency of the electricity production process) and electricity infrastructure already deployed, the EV is the smart choice. Good Luck Nissan.
